Doing this project
has been a passionate piece of learning. Understanding how the stars of
the zodiac, moon phases, and the changing seasons of the wheel of the
year are intertwined feels key to opening human consciousness to the
wisdom of Nature. For me this unfolding began by fostering a
relationship with the moon, watching her wax and wane, her shifting
course through the year, recognizing her pull on my moods, and allowing
myself to accept and work with her tide. As I moved my attention
towards moon and stars, the elements, plants and animals, I began to
find myself led back to the vital stream of life.
Astrology is a rich language of
sign and pattern. In order to continue the process of understanding the
zodiac I challenged myself to attach my own symbol to each sign. My
goal was to solidify my knowledge and feelings about the signs into
visual and written expression.
I chose to draw my zodiac
from Goddess myth and imagery. This allowed me to explore her many
facets and how she reflects what it is to be woman. It has been a
delightful challenge to stretch back, reading remnants of Her story so
old they connect the mind and heart to the times of our ancestors, my
dream time. While following strands of her silken web I am reminded
time and time again of Her complexity, holding a host of aspects, names,
and faces. There are so many ways to understand Her, as she reveals our
own reflection. Throughout the process of reading and painting I moved
back and forth fluidly between my thinking mind and my intuitive
understanding. Often I had a feel for the energy of the sign, then
opened a book to a passage that sparked a visual image.
While I have a deep desire
to see the connections between cultures and times, my voice is my own.
I am a woman of Western European ancestry, living in the Unites States.
I have my own views and opinions, a compassionate heart, and the
conviction to speak from my soul as I feel stirred by currents of
truth. I look forward to further opening of my mind with time, as I am
exposed to other people and places, but realize that I will always be a
work in progress. I humbly refuse to remain silent until I feel as
though I “know it all”. It is so important to give voice to this
wisdom, we all know it already, it dwells deep in our bones.
Some would say that an
agrarian calendar has limited application in our heavily industrial
society, but that perspective may also be the key to why it is so
critical to our planets survival. By opening ourselves to the wheel of
the year, celebrating the quarter and cross quarter holy days, and being
mindful of the cycles of the seasons, heavenly bodies, and ourselves, we
reconnect to the deep well of our collective unconscious, tapping the
wisdom that our ancestors experienced as daily life.
I hope the presentation of
this work will inspire others on their life’s journey, to dance with the
stars. They are an expansive reminder to listen for Her ever beating
heart.
