Sagittarius is an adventurer. She is the truth
seeker, questing for the meaning of life. She is an
explorer who holds the wisdom of her travels and life
experiences, the bard or story teller. She is a
combination of the natural and human worlds since truth can only
be found by looking to all possibilities.
Her card in
Tarot is Art and Temperance (14) which represents the
principles of integration, synthesis, and synergy. Here
Sagittarius reminds us to use our dreams and life
visions to express our true selves, integrating the
opposing elements of ourselves.
Sagittarius
time is between Samhain and the Winter Solstice. The
days are shortening, the harvest is in and stored away.
This is a time of storytelling and dream, reflecting on
the year gone by.
The moon is
moving from her disseminating to last quarter phase.
The light is waning and she is rising in the dark sky
later in the evening. The fruit has formed and is heavy
on the vine. This marks the time to share what one has
learned, to savor the fruits of one’s labors.
When I began
working with Sagittarius I immediately wanted her as a
centaur archer, aiming for the star of truth, but
finding her as a goddess was more challenging. I
searched for horse goddesses and found Welsh Rhiannon,
the Great Queen and white mare who guides us on the
lessons we must learn. She is considered similar to
Macha and Epona.
I chose Epona
to represent Saggitarius. She is a Celtic horse
goddess, the white mare. Her symbols include the
cornucopia, whip, harness, and key to the door of the
Otherworld. She is abundance with her cornucopia,
overflowing with apples, corn, and fruits of the earth.
She is goddess of horse, oxen, mule, and ass. She is
guide for souls of the dead on their journey to the
other world. The horse is often connected to funeral
rites and passage to other realms in ancient Europe,
“horse enables the shaman to fly through the air to
reach the heavens.”
To me Epona
fits with the essence of Sagittarius. She holds the
abundance of life, the sweet fruit that one enjoys when
they are living their life vision, finding their truth.
Her connection to the Otherworld and her mystical
journeys reflect the need to travel to those sacred,
possible frightening places, with in ourselves and out
in the world in order to find abundance.
